Fans of Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments cannot miss this riveting movie, helmed by the highly respected and Oscar-winning director George Stevens. A prime example of the Hollywood Biblical Epic genre that flourished in the 1950s and early 1960s.

"The Greatest Story Ever Told" is a monumental, reverent cinematic retelling of the life of Jesus Christ, as chronicled in the Four Gospels of the New Testament. The film begins with the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem and follows his life through his childhood in Nazareth, his ministry—including the gathering of his twelve apostles, his sermons, and his miracles—the growing opposition from Roman authorities and the Jewish priesthood, the Last Supper, his arrest, trial, crucifixion, and culminates with his resurrection and ascension. Max von Sydow portrays Jesus with quiet solemnity, anchoring an all-star cast of Hollywood legends in various supporting and cameo roles.

Produced and released in 1965, "The Greatest Story Ever Told" was one of the last and most expensive of the Biblical cinema period, with an estimated budget of $20 million, an astronomical sum for the time. It was filmed in Ultra Panavision 70 (a wide-screen format) to maximize the epic scale. George Stevens aimed for a film of deep reverence and spiritual dignity, consciously avoiding the sensationalism and over-the-top melodrama often associated with earlier entries in the genre.

Stevens also famously decided to shoot in the American West (specifically Monument Valley, Utah, and Arizona) instead of the Middle East, feeling the historical sites were too eroded and changed. This choice gives the film a unique, often starkly beautiful, but distinctly American Western landscape aesthetic, a unique blend of the sacred and the sublime.

However, despite its ambition, the film was a commercial failure, often cited as the movie that effectively killed the Biblical Epic genre in Hollywood for decades due to its massive financial loss.
