Fans of Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, The Saint and The Falcon cannot miss this entertaining chapter in the long-running Charlie Chan mystery movies series. Charlie Chan is played this time by Sidney Toler.

World-famous Chinese-American detective Charlie Chan, now working for the U.S. government, is on the trail of a dangerous spy ring attempting to steal secret government radar plans. The investigation begins when one of the spies is murdered, leaving behind a bloody footprint —the "scarlet clue"— and a stolen car. Chan, accompanied by his Number Three Son, Tommy (Benson Fong), and his perpetually fearful chauffeur, Birmingham Brown (Mantan Moreland), traces the clues to the Cosmo Radio Center, a facility housing both a radio soap opera studio and the high-tech Hamilton Laboratory, where the radar secrets are being developed.

As Chan interrogates the staff, actors, and management, the murders continue, employing increasingly ingenious and high-tech methods. Chan must use his signature quiet wisdom and deductive reasoning to unmask the killer and the mastermind behind the espionage before the vital secrets fall into the wrong hands.

The Scarlet Clue is a later-era entry in Charlie Chan's film series. It was produced and distributed by Monogram Pictures, a "Poverty Row" studio. Monogram had taken over the series from 20th Century Fox in the early 1940s, leading to a noticeable drop in production values but a marked increase in the sheer quantity of releases. Released in 1945, at the very end of World War II, the film clearly taps into contemporary espionage and wartime paranoia fears, shifting the villain from a traditional murderer to a foreign spy ring stealing military secrets. This was a common trope in B-movies of the era.
