Tadataka Ino (Tetsuo Kato), at the age of 56, embarks on a long-awaited journey to Ezo (present-day Hokkaido) with his second son, Hidezo (Daijiro Kato), and others. Driven by his lifelong dream of becoming the first person in the world to accurately determine the value of one degree of the meridian in order to calculate the size of the Earth, he sets out on a survey expedition.
