Trump Signals Possible Expansion of Iran War as US Deploys 9K More Troops

President Donald Trump is signaling the possibility of an expansion of U.S. military action against Iran as thousands of additional American forces head to the Middle East and diplomatic efforts remain stalled.

Trump this week renewed pressure on Tehran to reach an agreement, threatening further military action if Iranian leaders refuse.

"They'll either sign a very fair deal or they won't exist any longer," Trump said.

The warnings come as the United States increases its military presence in the region. Roughly 9,000 additional personnel are deploying aboard several ships, including the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group. The buildup could eventually give the United States three aircraft carrier groups in the region.

The developments come amid heightened scrutiny of several recent security incidents that U.S. and allied officials are investigating for possible connections to Iran.

British authorities are investigating a suspected plot near RAF Fairford, an air base used by U.S. forces. Five men were initially arrested and later released on bail, while authorities subsequently arrested a dual British-Iranian national on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. British officials have said there are strong indications of Iranian involvement, but have not publicly disclosed the evidence behind that assessment. Iran has denied involvement.

Iran is also facing changes in one of its major sources of leverage in the conflict: the Strait of Hormuz.

Middle Eastern crude oil exports have rebounded close to levels seen before the war as producers increasingly use alternative pipelines, ship-to-ship transfers and other methods to keep oil moving. Refined petroleum products, including diesel, remain significantly disrupted.

The developments come as Washington and Tehran remain at odds over the terms of any agreement to end the conflict, leaving open questions about whether the next phase will bring renewed diplomacy or additional military action.
