TRUMP'S RUSSIAN DIESEL DEAL EXPOSES US HYPOCRISY | INDIA, PUTIN, ZELENSKY

Donald Trump threatened India with punitive tariffs over its purchases of Russian oil. Now, the U.S. President has struck a deal with Vladimir Putin to bring Russian diesel to American and global markets. Is this a glaring double standard in Washington's Russia policy? And what does it mean for India?

In this India Today Global report, we examine Trump's Russian diesel deal, the backlash from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and the implications of the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026.

TRUMP TURNS TO PUTIN FOR RUSSIAN DIESEL

On October 9, Trump announced that Russia would immediately supply 300,000 tonnes of diesel, followed by another 500,000 tonnes in November and one million tonnes thereafter. The move comes amid soaring fuel prices and ahead of the crucial November U.S. midterm elections. Trump says lower prices for American farmers, ranchers and truckers are a priority. The U.S. Treasury has also issued a temporary licence easing sanctions on certain Russian diesel shipments through April 2027.

WHY INDIA IS ASKING QUESTIONS

The controversy revives questions about Washington's treatment of New Delhi. In 2025, Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods over India's purchases of Russian oil, taking the total levy to 50%. His administration argued that Russian energy revenues were helping finance Moscow's war against Ukraine. India, which imports around 90% of its energy requirements, has maintained that its energy decisions are guided by national interest and the need for affordable, reliable supplies.

Now, the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 gives Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries targeted under its provisions for buying Russian oil and gas. The diesel deal has intensified scrutiny of the contrast between Washington's warnings to other countries and its own energy requirements.

ZELENSKY'S SHARP WARNING

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticised the deal, calling it a gift to Putin and warning that easing sanctions without a clear, lasting de-escalation agreement could prolong the war. Zelensky has urged Washington to maintain pressure on Moscow and proposed reciprocal steps to stop attacks on energy infrastructure.

Can Trump justify buying Russian fuel while threatening countries such as India with tariffs for doing business with Moscow? Will the deal ease American fuel prices, and what could it mean for U.S.-India trade ties? Watch India Today Global for the latest on Trump's Russia policy, India's energy interests, the Ukraine war and the growing geopolitical fallout.
