Yvette Cooper said the first migrants due for deportation to France would be detained “within days” and she expects them to be returned to France “within weeks”.
While she expects some migrant removals to take longer due to legal challenges, she said some should be sent back “very quickly”, in a sign that the first could be returned to France later this month.
The treaty to implement the one-in, one-out returns deal, the first of its kind since the small boats crisis began in 2018, will be published later today and come into effect immediately.
It means the first migrants could be detained later this week if there are migrant crossings, although maritime forecasts suggest there will not be any arrivals until Thursday at the earliest.
