Shabana Mahmood has emerged as the frontrunner to become Chancellor in Andy Burnham's new government, according to senior Labour figures.

The current Home Secretary is understood to have moved ahead of other contenders as Burnham finalises his top cabinet appointments.

The appointment would make Mahmood one of the most senior figures in the new administration.

While no final decision has been announced, a cabinet reshuffle is expected shortly after Burnham takes office.

Ian Collins is joined by Paul Johnson, the former Director at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, to discuss this.
