The European Parliament has approved a major package of migration reforms, triggering a heated confrontation inside the chamber. The legislation passed with 418 votes in favour and 218 against. Supporters argue that the reforms are needed to make the EU's migration and return system more effective, particularly as many people whose asylum applications have been rejected remain within member states. The package includes measures requiring people subject to return decisions to cooperate with the process, provisions allowing detention in certain circumstances for significantly longer periods, recognition of deportation decisions across EU member states and a framework for establishing return hubs in countries outside the European Union. But the political reaction inside Parliament was just as striking as the vote itself. Right-wing lawmakers were heard chanting ‘Send them back’, while members on the left responded with ‘Shame on you’. The confrontation led to repeated points of order, with some lawmakers criticising the conduct of the chamber and describing the proceedings as a ‘circus’. So what exactly has the European Parliament approved, and what could the new rules mean for asylum seekers, deportations and the EU's migration system? This video breaks down the vote, the key provisions of the reform package and the political confrontation that followed. The statements and characterisations made by individual lawmakers are attributed to them.
